Castel San Vincenzo is a small town, at 748m above sea level, of about 600 residents at the foothill of the Mainarde mountains. The town stands, perched on a rocky ridgeline, within the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. Castel San Vincenzo was created by the union of two small hamlets, one being Castellone al Volturno and San Vincenzo al Volturno.
The town, like many other hilltop towns in the area, was created for the protection of the Benedictine monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno.
We walked through the maze of alleyways, up and down stone steps, through archways that led us to the historic centre of the town and to the parish church
