Cafe` de Paris

September 2025

Cafe` de Paris is a wonderful bakery and cafe in the centre of Colli a Volturno. The name of this large art deco style cafe comes from the comment made by Charles de Gaulle whilst resident in the town during the second world war. Colli a Volturno was positioned on the Gastav Line, and was used as a base for a number of allied leaders. Charles de Gaulle stated that the town reminded him of a 'piccolo Parigi' (a little Paris)!

This wonderful cafe` was the base for breakfast and break-time coffees and pastries for all of the students that came over for the September intensive courses. The memory of being able to sit outside in the sunshine with a view of the mountains whilst drinking a latte macchiato is something that will warm all of us through the dark winter nights in the UK. It was so good to walk in and be greeted with, 'buongiorno teach', I certainly felt like a local!

Cafe` de Paris' bakers have won numerous awards for their filled cannoli, which are much lighter than their Sicilian counterparts. They also serve a wide range of small soft cakes made with almond flour, which is such a treat for someone like me who is gluten intolerant.

They are also the go-to place on a Sunday for trays of pastries which Italians take to friend's or family lunches. The gorgeous trays of pastries are wrapped in shiny paper, ready to go.

I can't wait to return next September.
