On Thursday afternoon, after a fabulous meal at Taverna di Sanniti, we went to Pietrabbondante. This is an archeological site dating back to 400bc. The site is the former temple and forum for the Samnite people who lived in Molise, parts of Abruzzo, Campania and Puglia. We were so lucky to have an archaeologist friend of our friend, Paolo, explain the history of the archaeological excavations and the use of the various areas.
The most extraordinary thing was the amphitheatre, which was in fact the seat of government. The seats in the amphitheatre are ergonomic, as they had to be use for long sittings, as opposed to the seats in the Colosseum and the Arena in Verona, which were standard square stone seats. 13th September 2025
